When one colleague saw my photographs, he commented, "But these people don't look gay" at a showing, people complimented me on my "AIDS pictures" even though none of the selections depicted victims of the disease. Such photographs have been used to define all gay people. Photographers - driven to produce the most arresting pictures possible - often portray gays only in extreme circumstances. ![]() I wanted to show a reflection of America - and I wanted everyone, gay or straight, to be able to relate to the stories captured in photographs and oral histories, a selection of which are presented here. Gay men and lesbians were all around me, but with their chameleon-like ability to blend into their surroundings, I didn't recognize them.Īs I searched for subjects for the book I had in mind, I operated under the assumption that I could find gay people anywhere. My mind was filled with stereotypes, and I needed to learn more about myself and others like me. These are the images I looked for nine years ago, when I began to realize that I was gay.
